1/20/2024 0 Comments Arizona nuclear fallout shelters![]() ![]() ![]() The Cold War seemed to create a general misconception – that a nuclear incidents are not survivable. I’d hate to see us succumb to fear mongering and instead educate ourselves, prepare for the possibility, and work toward eliminating nuclear power and weapons. My hope is that nuclear preparedness becomes a topic we’re more comfortable talking about again. But now that we’ve all been reminded that nuclear accidents can happen, nobody is laughing anymore. ![]() *edit: apparently Riverside county was the first county in the state to be chosen by the Department of Defense to develop some kind of fallout shelter plan back in the 60's, so I'm guessing it must be a strategic area.Nuclear fallout shelters have been stigmatized as the ultimate prep for the paranoid and the butt of many jokes. If there are any large manufacturing facilities around here, maybe somewhere in Riverside closer to San Bernadino?Īs far as shelter, what is everyone's plan? Do people even have basements here? Is there a government building or school or mall with a fallout shelter? Do the 3 big hospitals have basements? ![]() I think we'd absolutely see fallout if something hit there though for sure. The only thing I found was this site that shows fallout based on any location you choose:Īre there any "valuable" targets around here in the area or county? I was guessing Twentynine Palms maybe since it has a military base, but I don't know if it actually would be. I know I've seen a map somewhere of actual US targets Russia would hit, but I can't find it. My general scenario would be the immediate area here wouldnt be an actual direct target for any of our adversaries, but we'd be getting fallout from Los Angeles, San Diego, and other areas and would have a little bit of time to actually shelter. I literally can't think of anything that's underground here. I'm newer the the area (Palm Springs), so I'm not familiar with any "safe" places that would be appropriate for a fallout scenario. With basically nothing off the table as far as craziness happening in the world today, I don't think it's outside the possibility at this point that something or someone could trigger an incident or all-out war in the near future that involves Russia, North Korea, or China purposely or accident launching nuclear weapons.Įven if the possibility is extremely low, the consequences are extremely high and should at least be minimally prepared for. ![]()
